Though summer seems to be the best time to be in Poland (and pretty much everywhere else), B[ZU] made the move back to Canada for the next three months. With B having electives and placements spread across London, Kitchener, and Toronto, it was difficult to sort out living arrangements. We established base camp in Kitchener at my family home which has never been so full. My sister just moved back for her school semester and having B[ZU] stay in the basement has raised the household count to 6.5. The 0.5 accounts for my bro-in-law A, who tries to visit as often as possible to spend time with his lovely girlfriend (my sister S), as well as his brother B and maybe little, old me. This living arrangement allows us to charge our “family relation” batteries for the next dry spell from September to December.
Speaking of family events, we have already made a trip to Windsor to visit the in-laws and though the weather was a downer, we had a chance to catch up and to enjoy the company of our family. On Sunday we visited Colassanti’s, an Essex county attraction consisting of greenhouses in which one can find a petting zoo, a little arcade, minigolf, a cafeteria, a candy shop, and the main draw for us, a nursery. S had some succulent stocking to do for her new project for Till&Sia. Exciting stuff to come, so follow the company’s account on Facebook and twitter (@till_and_sia) for news! The rain didn’t bother us as we ate our cinnamon donuts and our kettle corn while browsing strange plant species and, more discretely, the other visitors, some of which were worth observing. Man, people like to dress “comfy” in Canada, something that I forgot while living abroad.
A big event for me during this weekend was receiving a very special gift from my mother-in-law. She shyly approached me and started telling me the backstory on Flora Kung, an American designer who was really big in the 80’s and 90’s. Then she took me to the guest room where a vintage Flora Kung pantsuit, complete with original tags, was hanging. I couldn’t believe my luck when the silk floral-print pants fit perfectly, and the black silk quilted jacket with a matching lining had the neckline that I had been looking for. Though I never considered myself a big vintage designer aficionado, I was over the moon excited to be the new owner of something so beautiful and precious.
This next weekend is also going to be full of fun adventures and bonding moments as I embark on one of my closest friend’s cottage bachelorette getaway! Living in Warsaw, I often found myself missing girly nights with my sisters and my friends. As often as B would entertain my need to bake something, bring out the wine and turn on a rom com, he wasn’t enthusiastic about it. Unless there were chips. Then he was a willing accomplice. Back to the weekend plans, it’s nice to also spend time with my friend this summer before the wedding, the honeymoon, the start of her new job, and her move. This girl has a lot going on, so a weekend away with close friends is just what the doctor ordered.
Monday morning I will be starting a new job at the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It’s an amazing opportunity to do something meaningful this summer and make a little money on the side. I hope to learn a lot through this experience and use my skills to contribute to this organization. The logistics are also amazing with the position entailing 30 hours a week for 8 weeks and the office is close enough to bike to. Simply perfect.
We really must have a team of people praying for us and keeping us in their thoughts and wishes, because ever since we got married, we have been receiving so many blessing and everything has been “working out”. Personally, I had a lot of anxiety moving from my safe bubble of a planned, academic life, based on semesters and co-op terms, to a great unknown future dependant on “how things turn out.” Slowly but surely, I am becoming accustomed to finding joy in my day-to-day and taking life one step at a time. Having B with me every step of the way is the main reason that this is possible. Right now he is my only constant and everything: time, distance, happiness, pain, difficulties, love, are relative to him and his existence in my life. I don’t mean to sound desperate or having dependency issues but through our adventures so far I have been discovering what a life partner and a spouse really is. It’s a wonderful relationship and I am so lucky to have found someone that is just perfect for me and I hope that he feels the same.
Wishing all of you a ‘love’ly beginning to your summer.
