One of my favourite places to stroll through in Warsaw is the Royal Lazienki Park.
Lazienki in Polish means Baths (or bathrooms). So I guess it should be called the Royal Baths Park but I think they didn't want to confuse tourists. Lazienki used to be the summer residence of Polish Royalty. It's easy to see how they would have enjoyed the warm days lounging under the willows lining the lake on which the Palace on the Water is located. Now Varsoviens and tourists alike can feel a little regal while exploring the beautiful structures and landscaping elements in the park.
An interesting characteristic that left a lasting impression on me when I first visited as a child was the strange "wildlife" present here.
The red squirrels and grey crows were weird enough but I was shocked to see peacocks strutting their stuff!
This created a whole avalanche of questions:
Where did they come from? Why don't they leave the park? Where do they sleep? What happens to them in the winter? Can they fly? Are these descendants of King Stasio's peacocks? WHY ARE THEY HERE?
The presence of peacocks puzzles me but all in all I'm glad they are here. I guess that since my new surname has "paw" ( Polish for peacock) in it, I feel somewhat connected to these beautiful, exuberant birds.
So if you ever feel like Warsaw is drab and grey, check out the colourful fauna in the Royal Lazienki Park!
