Because nothing says "hot date" like a tarte flambée
éWith B being in the midst of internal medicine exams this weekend, we spent Valentine's Day in Warsaw, in our lovely, cozy little nest.
We did poke our noses out, however, to honour the reservations we had made at Flambéeria, on Emilia Plater Street. The house specialty is their wood-fired tart (more like flatbread) which comes with various toppings ranging from zucchini and goat cheese, chicken and broccoli, to beetroot and pickled herring!
It's a cute little place with a welcoming and warm atmosphere- ideal for both lunch dates and a night out with friends. This is thanks to both their accommodating staff, who clearly enjoy working here, as well as their simple but curated aesthetic, complete with interesting light fixtures, an exposed brick wall and distressed wood panelling.
Their menu is not overwhelmingly diverse (always a plus for a decision-phobe like me) but with enough options to keep everyone pleased with their meal- whether the choice was a salad, a flatbread, or soup. Their cocktail menu is longer than their tart one, making this the place to come for drinks and nibbles (I work with Brits, it rubs off) with friends or on date night.
We were lucky to have scored a special Valentine's Day menu, designed especially for couples. It included a cocktail for "him" and for "her", two chickpea salads, a choice of two flatbreads, and two strawberry mousse desserts. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves but let me tell you that everything was even more delicious than it looked! We spent two hours there, indulging in the incredible flavours, reminiscing on happy memories, staring deeply into each other's eyes, and all that romantic nonsense.
Ok, I admit. I'm a sucker for that stuff.
After we had happily skipped out of the Flambeeria and onto the street, we wandered through the Srodmiescie Poludnie neighborhood. Many of the buildings had been restored to their beautiful pre-war state, with elaborate white beaux art facades, elegant balconies and terraces. Once in a while these striking edifices would be beside seemingly abandoned specimens with crumbling red brick. It was nice to see, however, that the old buildings were becoming a minority and that the area was extremely vibrant with a booming restaurant scene and a number of interesting cafes and boutiques sprinkled throughout. Once the restoration is completed, it will truly be a district equal to those of other great cities like Paris or Vienna. So if you're in town and want to envision what Warsaw used to look like, walk down Poznanska Street. Especially if you are hungry.
So even though we didn’t make it to Venice or Rome for Valentine's Day this year, we found that it is possible to spend a romantic afternoon in Warsaw, "the grey city". I guess you just have to know where to look.
And I would start with Flambéeria.
Bisouxx and all our love!
