This last weekend, B[ZU] attended an event hosted by Mysia 3 ( a really cool concept store mall) and USTA magazine. It was the Festival of Apples and Ciders at which one could sample different types of apples and apple products like chutneys, apple butters, juices, ciders, pastries and even perfumes!
Along with interesting (and delicious) displays and booths, the event also had meetings with orchard owners, top chefs that have been incorporating apples into their dishes, and with Eliza Morawska, the famous Polish food blogger that has recently released her second cookbook- this one is all about apples!
Now Eliza and I had never met previously, but coincidentally, I had heard of her before. I received her first cookbook as a gift from my aunt a couple of years ago. B and I pulled it out a year ago to bake our first layer cake for his birthday celebration. It was a unique book because it was bilingual, so we could switch between reading it in Polish and in English. So as you can probably piece together, I was excited to meet her since her recipes had sentimental value to me as well as just being plain mouth watering.
I have been inspired by both the Polish patriotism ( stubbornness) and this event to put the 5 kg of apples that my grandpa gave me last weekend to good use. We had caramelized apples with our pork chops on Sunday and yesterday I baked a szarlotka, ( Polish apple pie) a staple in every Polish household, as we had some guests over for B's birthday.
As much as I love the summer, I love the flavours of fall.
