I've never labelled myself as an overly positive person. I have always felt most comfortable with the label "realist"- seeing the water at the 125mL mark on the glass. However, in recent times, I seem to have fallen on a positive streak, especially when it comes to contests- I feel like I will win and then I do. It's the weirdest thing.
In the last 4 months I have entered 5 contents and walked away with 4 prizes- all of which I have really enjoyed and am lucky to have, even though they were not lottery jackpots. The most recent of my conquests was a pair of tickets to Restaurant Week Polska.
Restaurant week is a culinary festival during which the top ranked restaurants in cities around the country offer price fixe menus which give people an opportunity to experience fine dining without breaking the bank. In Warsaw, for 39 zl you get an excellent quality 3 course meal in a beautiful dining environment.
Since we got word of our winnings quite late in the game we were limited in our choices of restaurants but finally decided on a Sunday lunch at Art Bistro in the Praga district of Warsaw. Praga is known as Warsaw's "dark side", known for crumbling buildings, higher levels of crime, and bullet proof glass windows. I can't say that I have spent that much time there, but from what I can tell, it's a bit frozen in post-war times but not dangerous. You're not going to get shanked- I think.
Anyway, it's starting to go through an interesting transition, with a growing art scene, a sprinkling of hot restaurants, and the new Google campus! I wrote about Praga's desirable SOHO district last year when we were at a design market and it continues to be a magnet for artists, professionals, and just hip Varsoviens.
One of the reasons for why we chose Art Bistro as our Restaurant Week destination is that is forced us to visit the right side of Warsaw and discover a part of our city that we knew little about. And aren't we glad that we did.
Stalowa 52 is a 3 star boutique hotel and beautiful restaurant housed in a restored brick building on Stalowa street. Though is started off as just a small bistro and a hostel, the owners have transformed it into a unique destination on the map of Warsaw. The dining room of the restaurant is in a large greenhouse through which you can see the red bricks of the surrounding buildings and the hotel has one-of- a kind rooms which serve as a backdrop to display the work of local artists and designers.

The meal was beautifully executed, the staff was polite and gracious, and the interior layout was energizing and fresh. I thoroughly enjoyed every dish and loved the fact that I was experiencing something very unique in a place that was so passionately and thoughtfully created and run. I tip my hat to the owners and the staff at Art Bistro Stalowa 52 and look forward to returning here one day and continuing to discover gems like this.
A big thanks to Restaurant Week Polska for the tickets and the opportunity to discover the flavour of my city.
